Housing Stability
Our vision is for everyone in Kalamazoo to have a safe, affordable, and stable place to call home, by ending generational homelessness in the county.
We aim to achieve this by reducing homelessness recidivism and improving housing stability and retention rates.
Our core services are:
a) We guide individuals and families through the complex process of finding and retaining safe and affordable housing by providing a range of services including eviction prevention support, financial literacy education, budget counseling, dispute resolution, personalized assistance, accompanying to appointments, life skill coaching and advocacy. We also provide financial assistance to clients to help them retain their housing or secure affordable housing.
b) We collaborate with housing providers ( landlords) to provide dispute resolution services, financial safety nets and education on the barriers faced by the unhoused to foster positive tenant – landlord relationships while minimizing the risk of homelessness.
c) We actively engage with the community to raise awareness about homelessness issues, dispel myths, and foster empathy and understanding. Through educational workshops, open discussions, and speaking at community events, we aim to create a more inclusive and informed community.
d) We advocate for fair housing policies and the recognition of housing as a fundamental human right by engaging with local authorities and policymakers, and working toward systemic changes that benefit the entire community.
Our methodology is rooted in a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach, strategically crafted through an in-depth needs analysis.
Upon client intake, a comprehensive assessment delves into support systems, historical context, and unique challenges of each client. Tailored assistance plans are designed to address their specific needs.
A Housing Advocate assigned to the client offers consistent support, helps clients connect with various services, and provides personalized coaching, and mentoring.
We maintain continuous engagement, closely tracking their progress over the next 6 to 12 months, at key milestones, specifically at the 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month marks, ensuring a comprehensive and sustained support system.
We proactively establish three way agreements with clients and landlords, outlining joint commitment to safeguarding the rights of all parties.
