Thinking about a larger gift?
There are meaningful ways to support KHA beyond a one-time donation – through a Donor-Advised Fund, a gift of stock, or a legacy bequest in your will. These kinds of gifts allow us to plan for the future and serve more families over time.
A story from our work
Robert’s Story
In January, Robert (name changed to protect privacy) called us from a hospital bed. Elderly, disabled, and homeless, he had nowhere to go when he was discharged. Just weeks earlier, he had been stable – housed through a partnership with Men of Purpose, a local transitional housing provider. But life had unraveled, the way it sometimes does, slowly and then all at once.
KHA’s Housing Advocate – Kierra Gill had no time to wait. She got on the phone with his hospital social worker and started working the problem – because that’s what we do. Within days, she had connected with one of our housing provider partners – Longhorn Properties, a landlord willing to do something remarkable: hold a ground-floor apartment for a man he had never met, in a building he’d never visited, recovering from an illness no one could fully predict.
KHA covered the deposit and first month’s rent, buying Robert the one thing he needed most – time. Time to heal, to stabilize, to let his next benefit payment arrive so he could stand on his own feet again. And when the hospital finally discharged him, there was a furnished apartment waiting. Groceries in the kitchen. A bed made up. A home he had only ever seen on a screen.
Thirty days. That’s how long it took to go from a car, to a hospital, to a place to call home. Kierra still checks in on him. That’s a true demonstration of KHA’s Housing First Approach coupled with our focus on love, compassion and our belief that Housing is a Human Right.
Your gift makes sure that our team can keep showing up for people like Robert, every single day.
